THE 10^{TH ANNUAL} DAVID H. HORNE MEMORIAL HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY GOLF TOURNAMENT HELPS FEED THE HUNGRY

            The tenth annual David H. Horne Memorial Hunters for the Hungry Golf Tournament was held at London Downs Golf Course on October 5, 2011.  The event was held in memory of the founder and first director of Hunters for the Hungry, David H. Horne.  This year's tournament was another huge success raising $21,944.66. This amount of monies will allow the program to process and distribute 109,723 four-ounce servings of venison to those in need all across Virginia this fall and winter.

             The tournament field was comprised of 29 teams who enjoyed the good food and fellowship on a beautiful fall afternoon.  Tournament play was followed by a meal, live and silent auctions and an awards ceremony.  There were numerous door prizes and fantastic live and silent auctions with items donated by local individuals and businesses.  Eddie and Cheryl Ragland and staff from Appomattox, VA catered a wonderful meal that was enjoyed by all.

             The tournament was a captain's choice format and winners were awarded trophies based upon the total number of teams and individual team scores. First and second place were awarded in each of the three flights. The winning foursome in the First Flight was Jake Simpson, Charles Rosenbaum, Mike McKeag, and Justin Riley with a score of 58. Second place in the First Flight, with a score of 58 was Jo Todd, Marie Winks, Becky Hawkins, and Teresa Hudson. First place in the Second Flight with a score of 64, went to Mike Bergin, Sr., Kevin Brown, Kim Combs, and Mike Riley. Second place winners in the Second Flight, with a score of 64, were Janet Cochran, Dot Bolling, Debbie Young, , and Jay Bolling. First place in the Third Flight with a score of 67 were Chuck Allen, Marty Allen, Brad Allen, and William Wood. And finally, second place in the Third Flight, with a score of 69, went to Mike King, Donnie Stinnette, Wayne Wimmer, and R. A. Tibbs. There were also several individual prize winners for closest to the pin on all the course par 3’s and longest drives for both the men and ladies. In addition to many nice door prizes being awarded, there was again successful live and silent auction activities supported by those in attendance.  

             According to Debbie Reynolds, speaking on behalf of the Hunters for the Hungry program, the event was a huge success.  She said, "We sincerely appreciate all those that made this tournament possible.  Our sponsors, prize donors, players, volunteers and the staff at London Downs all had a part in making this an outstanding event.  The money raised from the tournament will provide thousands of pounds of venison to the needy in Virginia.  Thanks to all for their kindness and overwhelming response in memory of David."  

             Hunters for the Hungry is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit feeding organization that has as its 2011 goal, the distribution of 400,000 pounds of venison.  This meat is donated by successful hunters and is made available to those in need around the state.
