THE 8TH ANNUAL DAVID H. HORNE MEMORIAL HUNTERS FOR THE HUNGRY GOLF TOURNAMENT HELPS FEED THE HUNGRY
The
eighth annual David H. Horne Memorial Hunters for the Hungry Golf
Tournament was held at London Downs Golf Course on October 7, 2009.
The event was held in memory of the founder and first
director of Hunters for the Hungry, David H. Horne.
This year's tournament was a huge success raising $26,661.22.
This amount of monies will allow the program to process and
distribute 133,306 four-ounce servings of venison to those in need
all across Virginia this fall and winter.
The tournament field was comprised of 32 teams who enjoyed
the good food and fellowship on a beautiful fall afternoon.
Tournament play was followed by a meal, live and silent
auctions and an awards ceremony.
There were numerous door prizes and fantastic live and silent
auctions with items donated by local individuals and businesses.
Eddie and Cheryl Ragland and staff from Appomattox, VA
catered a wonderful meal that was enjoyed by all. The tournament was a captain's choice format and winners were awarded trophies based upon the total number of teams and individual team scores. First and second place were awarded in each of the three flights. The winning foursome in the First Flight was Janet Cochrane, Dot Bolling, Debbie Young, Barry Young with a score of 59. Second
place in the First Flight, with a score of 61 was Marty Kelly, John Compher, Ed
Wade, and Kenny Witt. First
place in the Second Flight
with a score of 64, went to Andy Key, Mike O’Connor, Joey Oliver,
and Bill Tibbs. Second
place winners in the Second Flight, with a score of 65, were Donald Tyler, Donnie Young,
Jim McGowan, and Pete Marcus. First
place in the Third Flight with a score of 67 were Walter Zyglocke, Jr., Ann
Zyglocke, Gary Larson, and Kathy Larson. Second
place in the Third Flight, with
a score of 67, went to Tommy Cash, Ed Cash, J. P. Saylor, and Tommy
Thacker.

According to Debbie Reynolds, speaking on behalf of the
Hunters for the Hungry program, the event was a huge success.
She said, "We sincerely appreciate all those that made
this tournament possible. Our
sponsors, prize donors, players, volunteers and the staff at London
Downs all had a part in making this an outstanding event.
The money raised from the tournament will provide thousands
of pounds of venison to the needy in Virginia.

Hunters for the Hungry is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit feeding
organization that has as its 2009 goal, the distribution of 380,000
pounds of venison. This
meat is donated by successful hunters and is made available to those
in need around the state. Gary
Arrington, Special Projects Coordinator for Hunters for the Hungry
added, " We here at Hunters for the Hungry have been so richly
blessed by all those who helped us with this event and thanks to the
overwhelming support we received, many less fortunate will be blessed
this year. Our sincerest thanks to each and every one that made the
event another success. Because of their generosity, we can continue
the mission and vision as we honor our dear friend David Horne."
