FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE Big
Island, VA HUNTERS
DONATE RECORD AMOUNT OF VENISON
Hunters for the Hungry recently announced that the 2001/2002
hunting season produced a record amount of venison for distribution to the
needy. Statewide the program
received, processed and distributed 233,499 pounds of low-fat high protein
venison for the less fortunate.
This exceeded their goal of 225,000 pounds.
It provided quality low-fat high protein nutrition to many who
otherwise would do without. It
represents the 10th consecutive year of growth for the Hunters
for the Hungry program.
This year’s distribution brings the total distributed since 1991
to 1,400,688 pounds. It is
truly testimony to the generosity of Virginia hunters, to the cooperation
of processors, and the willingness of foodbanks to be involved.
The program’s financial donors made the success in 2001 possible
as well as the consistent growth of the effort since its inception.
The Hunters for the Hungry program accepts deer donated by
successful Virginia hunters, raises funds to cover the processing of those
deer and distributes them through food banks, churches and other feeding
agencies. It is hunters,
foodbanks, and processors all working together that make the program a
success. The Hunters for the Hungry program is optimistic about the
future. The goal for 2002 is
to increase distribution to one quarter million pounds. Although this is a challenge we are hopeful hunters will do
even more for those in need. We
will need increased effort from all participants and to recruit additional
supporters.
Financial contributions are greatly needed.
Each deer we receive costs $30-$35 to process.
Without the necessary funds we certainly cannot reach our goal.
