Facts You Should Know
Consider:
- Hunger is a reality in Virginia's communities - both urban and rural.
- Meat is the least available food item to agencies serving the needy.
- Virginia's deer herd continues to expand. This expansion has created
problems with crop damage, property damage (deer/vehicle collisions), and will eventually
cause severe habitat problems for the deer themselves.
- The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has raised bag
limits in order to control the deer population. This puts successful hunters in a position
of having more meat than they can use.
- Venison is a low-fat, high-protein meat that is very nutritious.
- Professional meat processors can cut, wrap, and freeze the venison.
This assures a quality meat product can be made available to the hungry.
- The meat can be distributed through food banks and other nonprofit
organizations already working to provide food to the hungry.
- Processing and distribution costs average 60-65 cents per pound. The
retail costs of the same cuts of beef are $3.00 per pound.
- Since 1991, Hunters for the Hungry has been responsible for
distributing over 2.3 MILLION pounds of venison.
- .The potential exists to receive donation of and distribute in excess
of 500,000 pounds of venison annually in Virginia.
