Facts You Should Know

Consider:

  1. Hunger is a reality in Virginia's communities - both urban and rural.
  2. Meat is the least available food item to agencies serving the needy.
  3. Virginia's deer herd continues to expand. This expansion has created problems with crop damage, property damage (deer/vehicle collisions), and will eventually cause severe habitat problems for the deer themselves.
  4. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has raised bag limits in order to control the deer population. This puts successful hunters in a position of having more meat than they can use.
  5. Venison is a low-fat, high-protein meat that is very nutritious.
  6. Professional meat processors can cut, wrap, and freeze the venison. This assures a quality meat product can be made available to the hungry.
  7. The meat can be distributed through food banks and other nonprofit organizations already working to provide food to the hungry.
  8. Processing and distribution costs average 60-65 cents per pound. The retail costs of the same cuts of beef are $3.00 per pound.
  9. Since 1991, Hunters for the Hungry has been responsible for distributing over 2.3 MILLION pounds of venison.
  10. .The potential exists to receive donation of and distribute in excess of 500,000 pounds of venison annually in Virginia.
