David
Horne, Director and Founder of the Hunters for the Hungry Program
Dies
David Horne, the founder and Director of the Hunters for the
Hungry program died today, February 14, 2002 after a valiant battle
against cancer. He died in his home with his wife by his side as well as many
other treasured friends and family.
David H. Horne was 49 years old and had worked for the last 19
years providing food for people in need.
David was General Manager of the Society of St. Andrew a
nationwide produce salvage organization before starting the Hunters for
the Hungry program. The
Hunters for the Hungry program under his leadership grew into the
largest effort of it’s kind in the country, providing over 5.6 million
servings of venison since it’s inception in 1991. David was also a leader in his community and church serving on many boards and providing key leadership to many community organizations. His intelligence, sense of humor and way with people coupled with his abilities as a leader, problem solver, and gifted writer kept him constantly being sought to serve. He gave very generously of his time to many organizations.
He believed strongly in doing what you said you were going to do,
if he gave you his word on something it was as good as done.
He knew how to think a situation through and look at all the
possible solutions and come up with just the right solution.
David was a very special person, he knew how to make you want to
do your best, he did this by modeling hard work, and total respect and
appreciation for people and their efforts.
He always remembered to thank you for what you did, and when you
fell short he knew how to encourage you to try harder.
His support and encouragement will be missed by many. Tributes: Denny Quaiff, executive director for the Virginia Deer Hunters Association said “ David’s commitment and dedication to the Hunters for the Hungry program has been an inspiration to all of us that knew him. His work throughout the state has touched many lives and created a high standard for others to follow. The
Virginia Deer Hunters Association will always be indebted to David Horne
for all the sacrifices he has made and he will be greatly missed.” In Matthew 26 verses 35 & 40 we find these words from our savior Jesus Christ: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine you did for me.” David Horne fulfilled this command from Christ thousands upon thousands of times. His dedication of putting food upon the plates of the needy will forever be a testimony to this little man in stature but a man with a giant heart. David and those who have supported the Hunters for the Hungry program which he founded could always feel good during the Christmas and Thanksgiving holidays knowing that while our plates overflowed with food thousands of needy Virginians also had food on their plates. The hunters, sportsmen and Virginians have lost a dear friend but David is now with the best friend man can ever have - our Heavenly Father. God bless you my friend and may we never let your mission of feeding the needy go unfulfilled. -J.
Carson Quarles, Chairman of the Virginia Department of Game & Inland
Fisheries Board of Directors The people of Virginia have lost a great friend with the passing of David Horne. He was uniquely qualified to direct the Hunters for the Hungry program and his life of selfless service to his fellow man is a shining example for us all. We at the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries are especially indebted to David for his leadership in the successful establishment and more than ten years of operation of the Hunters for the Hungry program which has benefited so many Virginians in need. David Horne was a great Virginian and a man in full. Our hearts go out to his family and his many friends. - Bob Duncan, Chief of Wildlife Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries David was a man small in stature however a giant in heart. One who went quietly never seeking personal recognition for his untiring efforts and commitment toward the success of the Hunters for the Hungry program and the feeding of the needy with natures abundant resources. Braxton Bell, Past President Ruritan National
David probably has done as much as any hunter in Virginia to
benefit the citizens of the
Commonwealth. In our
travels we continue to hear the praise of the Virginia Hunters for the
Hungry program. We will all
miss him and we need to continue to support Hunters for the Hungry in
David’s memory – Sherry & Jim Crumley David was a huge inspiration to the Lynchburg Area Foodbank and an inspiration and wonderful friend to me. The foodbank and its recipients benefit greatly from the Hunter for the Hungry program The program which David founded provides high protein and nutritious red meat to our agencies to help feed the hungry in our community It is my prayer that everyone will continue to support the Hunters for the Hungry program not only to help the less fortunate but to keep David’s memory alive. Sharon Cash Director Lynchburg Area Food Bank
David’s dedication, sincerity of purpose, and enthusiasm for
serving others was an inspiration to many Ruritans and others.
His vision for a partnership between Ruritan clubs and Hunters

desire to serve will be remembered by all that he touched in life.

Ely, Executive Director Ruritan National
David was able to turn the hunter’s desire to share nature’s
bounty with those less fortunate into a program that helped tens of
thousands of needy people
across Virginia. The
