THE 5TH ANNUAL DAVID H. HORNE MEMORIAL HUNTERS FOR THE
HUNGRY GOLF TOURNAMENT HELPS FEED THE HUNGRY
The fifth
annual David H. Horne Memorial Hunters for the Hungry Golf Tournament was held
at London Downs Golf Course on October 4, 2006.
The event was held in memory of the founder and director of Hunters for
the Hungry, David H. Horne. This
year's tournament was a huge success raising over $29,100.00.
Proceeds from the tournament will be used to process and distribute
venison made available this season thus providing food for the needy all
across Virginia.
The tournament field was comprised of 31 teams who enjoyed the good
food and fellowship on a beautiful fall afternoon.
Tournament play was followed by a meal, silent auction and awards
ceremony. There were numerous
door prizes and fantastic live and silent auctions with items donated by local
individuals and businesses. Eddie
and Cheryl Ragland and staff from Appomattox, VA catered a wonderful meal that
was enjoyed by all.
The tournament was a captain's choice format and winners were awarded
trophies based upon the total number of teams and individual team scores.
First and second place was awarded in each of the three flights. The winning
foursome in the First Flight was David Jones, Mark Daniel, Tim Daniel, and Bryan
Lewis with a score of 58. Second
place in the First Flight, with a
score of 59, went to Jo Todd, Marie Winks, Brian Fedder, and Becky Hawkins.
First place in the Second Flight
with a score of 65 went to Phyllis Petty, Roy Petty, Billy Stewart, and Faye
Stewart. Second place winners in the Second
Flight, with a score of 65, were Jack Jennings, Irving Mathews, Bill
Williams, and Jack Tanksley. First place in the Third
Flight with a score of 69 were Gerald Boyd, Joey Layne, Scott Devening,
and Hal Devening. And finally, second place in the Third Flight, with a score of 69, went to Matt Knox, John Heslep,
Gary Arrington, and BryanYoung. Individual
prize winners were: Longest Drive Men - Ted Dodgion, Longest Drive Women -
Debbie Reynolds, Closest to Pin #3 - Gary Tucker, Closest to Pin #6 - Roy
Petty, Closest to Pin #11 - Walter Zyglocke, and Closest to Pin #16 - John
Bond.
According to Debbie Reynolds, speaking on behalf of the Hunters for the
Hungry program, the event was a huge success.
She said, "We sincerely appreciate all those that made this
tournament possible. Our
sponsors, prize donors, players, volunteers and the staff at London Downs all
had a part in making this an outstanding event.
The money raised from the tournament will provide thousands of pounds
of venison to the needy in Virginia. Thanks
to all for their kindness and overwhelming response in memory of David."
Hunters for the Hungry is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit feeding organization that has as its 2006 goal, the distribution of 350,000 pounds of venison. This meat is donated by successful hunters and is made available to those in need around the state
